Lt Gen Gautam Moorthy, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, an alumnus of National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy was commissioned into the Army Ordnance Corps in June 1975. He is also a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the Army War College and the National Defence College. During his long and distinguished career, he has held important command, staff and instructional appointments.
In Aug 2012, he was appointed as the 22nd Director General Ordnance Services and Senior Colonel Commandant. For his contribution during this tenure, he was awarded the PVSM and the AVSM. He was also appointed as the Honorary ADC to the President of India.
As the Director General Ordnance Services, he headed the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) that provides the materiel requirements of the Indian Army consisting of 13 lakh (1.3 million) troops and war fighting necessities for a range of over 2 lakh (200,000) vehicles and equipment. As the Head of the Organisation he oversaw forecasting, resource planning, procurement, warehousing, distribution and disposal of military equipment, ammunition and stores spread over 100 depots, manned by over 70,000 personnel (both military and civilian) and controlled an annual budget of approximately ₹11,000 crores.
He is a MSc in Defence Studies and he has two M Phils to his credit-one in Defence & Management Studies and the other in Defence & Strategic Studies. He is widely travelled having visited every state in India and 29 countries, including 12 in his official capacity.
He was appointed as the Administrative Member of the Armed Forces Tribunal of the Kolkata Bench from March 2015 to May 2019, a post akin to that of a high court judge wherein he was personally responsible in having adjudicated over 300 cases including some sensitive ones.
He is presently keeping himself engaged with CASA, keenly following geopolitics as it unfolds, reading, (mainly non-fiction,) listening to music (classic rock & jazz) and watching interesting films on OTT media.
